African Urban Village

Project type

Masterplan

Date

2024

Location

Ghana

This African Urban Village project is a vibrant new precinct that brings together living, working, and leisure in a walkable, human-scaled neighbourhood rooted in Ghanaian culture and community life. The design is carefully shaped by the local context—responding to climate, economy, and construction practice—to create a place that feels authentic, resilient, and deeply connected to its people.

Built around a network of shaded streets and pedestrian paths, the village promotes walkability and active daily life. Homes, markets, small businesses, and shared public spaces are arranged in close proximity to encourage interaction, convenience, and community support. The density is balanced—efficient yet comfortable—supporting local enterprise and social cohesion without overwhelming the landscape.

The architecture draws inspiration from traditional forms and materials, reinterpreted for modern needs. Passive design principles, natural ventilation, generous overhangs, and courtyards help cool the interiors, reducing reliance on energy while enhancing comfort. Locally sourced materials and simple, adaptable construction methods make the village more accessible, buildable, and maintainable by local hands.

Above all, this African Urban Village project is designed as a place where people can thrive—where culture is visible, daily life is celebrated, and the built environment supports a sustainable and inclusive future for generations to come.
