Shopping Centre Co-work Space
Project type
Workplaces
Date
2022
Location
Victoria, Australia
Nestled within the heart of a bustling shopping centre, this coworking space reimagines the contemporary workplace as a calming, biophilic retreat. Inspired by the gentle curves and layered ecosystems of the nearby Mullum Mullum Creek in Ringwood, the design draws from nature’s flow to create a workplace that is fluid, restorative, and deeply connected to place.
The spatial planning unfolds in organic layers—spaces for focused work, informal collaboration, rest, and creative recharge are seamlessly interwoven. The layout prioritizes openness and visual connection, with generous glazing and skylights that flood the interiors with natural light. Sunlight moves through the space like the creek itself—meandering, shifting, and always present—animating surfaces and supporting wellbeing throughout the day.
Soft, tactile materials like felt, natural wool, timber, and acoustic fabrics bring warmth and quiet comfort. Curved joinery, round-edge furniture, and flowline partitions evoke the erosion-shaped forms of the creek’s banks, guiding people gently through the space without harsh boundaries. Living greenery is integrated at every level—planters, hanging gardens, moss walls—providing not only visual relief but enhanced indoor air quality and a strong connection to nature.
From bright communal tables to peaceful nooks, and from open lounges to private pods nestled among the greenery, the space supports a diverse and intuitive rhythm of work and restoration. Whether for quiet solo concentration, energetic group brainstorming, or moments of stillness, the coworking environment is designed to inspire balance, creativity, and belonging—an urban oasis echoing the tranquility of Mullum Mullum Creek.
