A Contemporary Church in Victoria’s Green Wedge

Set within the rolling landscape of Victoria’s Green Wedge, this church concept reinterprets rural architectural language to create a grounded and community-focused place of worship. Drawing inspiration from traditional farm buildings, the design employs a refined sawtooth roof form — both a nod to agricultural structures and a means of drawing soft natural light deep into the interior.

The material palette is intentionally simple and robust, using corrugated metal, brick, and timber to reflect the honesty and durability of farm architecture. These elements give the church a tactile, grounded presence that harmonises with its rural setting.

At its core is a clearly defined, light-filled central atrium — a spatial anchor that brings people together while offering framed views of the surrounding countryside. This central volume establishes a strong connection between the sacred interior and the natural landscape beyond.

The atrium links seamlessly to the main worship venue and a collection of smaller spaces designed for families and community gatherings. These intimate, human-scaled rooms support everyday activity, reflection, and connection, making the church not only a place of worship but also a social and cultural heart for the community.

This concept offers a contemporary rural sanctuary — humble in form, generous in spirit, and deeply connected to both land and people.
